Maintaining autonomy in later life is essential to preserving mental health and overall well-being. When older adults are able to perform daily activities independently, they experience increased self-esteem and a greater sense of usefulness, which contributes to a positive emotional state. Dr. Luis Sandoval, our clinic’s geriatrician, provides more information on this topic.
How can independence be fostered in older adults?
In order to promote the independence of older adults, the following recommendations are key:
What is the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) and how does it help maintain independence?
During the geriatric consultation, the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) is performed, which includes a complete evaluation of nutritional status, physical condition, concomitant diseases (comorbidities), mental status and degree of autonomy. The Katz scale is used to determine whether the patient needs additional support if considered frail.
How do you develop a plan to maintain independence after IGV?
After the VGI, a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) matrix analysis is performed to establish customized strategies. For example:
After performing the VGI and the analysis of the SWOT Matrix, the specialist prepares a Geriatric Care Plan or Comprehensive Strategic Plan, establishing goals and monitoring the objectives set, such as recovery after a stroke, sugar control if diabetic, increase of muscle mass, and reduction of dizziness or falls, among others.
Remember: With good habits and regular medical monitoring, it is possible to be an autonomous, happy and healthy senior citizen. Enjoy every stage of your life to the fullest!
