Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) are infections transmitted from one person to another by sexual contact. These can be produced by bacteria, parasites, fungi, or a virus
Most of them are not life-threatening, except for HIV, which is a virus that destroys the body ability to fight infections. It is transmitted by the contact with several body fluids of people infected (blood, breastmilk, semen or vaginal discharges)
Here, Dr. Evelyn Campos, gynecologist specialist at Clinics Ricardo Palma tell us which are the most common
Human Papilloma Virus
It is the most common in men and women. In most of the cases the immune system helps the virus disappear and avoids the presence of cervical, vaginal, penile or anal cancer. Nowadays it can be prevented with vaccines
Chlamydia
Most of the time it has no symptoms and it usually affects women. If appropriate measures are not taking on time, it can swell the cervix and the fallopian tubes, causing infertility. In case of men, it appears as a white secretion by the urethra, pain urinating, or pain in the testis
Trichomoniasis
It can damage the cervix and the urethra. The main symptoms of its presence are pain urinating, odor discharge, itchiness in the vagina and fluid in the urethra
Genital Herpes
It is caused by two types of virus: simple herpes type 1 or type 2. Its symptoms usually appear after some time and unlike other STD; it has no cure. According to the specialist, a way to detect an STD is paying attention to any discomfort in the genital area, abdominal pain or vaginal discharge. If this happens, the ideal is to go immediately to see a specialist
