Allergic rhinitis is a disease or medical condition that is caused by an exaggerated and unnecessary activation of the immune system in the presence of non-harmful substances in the environment called allergens. In addition to generating constant discomfort, it can interfere with the development of daily activities whether at work, school, social gatherings and hobbies (cinemas or theaters); as well as in sleep and other resting periods. This time, Dr. José Gereda, a specialist in allergy and immunology at Clinica Ricardo Palma, will give us more information on the subject.
Causes
Allergic rhinitis is caused by some substances that are inhaled, such as:
Symptoms
Its main symptoms are:
These symptoms tend to become a normal part of life for some people, since people experience them almost every day of the week.
Prevention
It is not yet possible to prevent the onset of allergic rhinitis. This can begin in the first years of life and become stronger during teenage years or early adult life. However, by identifying what the patient is allergic to or what allergens activate their immune system, strategies can be proposed to reduce contact with these substances as much as possible.
Treatment
The most common treatment is based on medications, including antihistamines and/or corticosteroid nasal sprays, which serve to control symptoms, but not to cure allergic rhinitis. Other options include treatment with immunotherapy or allergy shots.
