Is scoliosis only caused by a blow to the spine?
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine into the shape of an S or a C. It usually manifests at the beginning of puberty, when growth is very quick.
Most of the cases are mild; however, when they are severe they can seriously affect the body and limit the quality of life of the patient.
Raul Macchiavello, Traumatologist of our clinic, says that when it is mild it often goes unnoticed by the parents and by the child because it does not cause discomfort.
“Before the pandemic, it was common for teachers or seamstresses to first notice that the child has uneven shoulders, or that one shoulder blade appears larger than the other or one side of the hip is higher than the other”, says the specialist. In these circumstances, it is suggested to see the Traumatologist.
The most common scoliosis is idiopathic and its origin is unknown, although it is supposed to have certain hereditary factors. “The less common can manifest itself by infantile cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, birth defects affecting the formation of bones of the spine or by injuries on it”, concludes.
