Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease that affects the central nervous system, and it is estimated that in Peru 7 out of every 100 thousand inhabitants suffer from it. Worldwide, more than 2.5 million people suffer from this condition, which occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). MS is most common in young adults and women between 20 and 40 years of age, although it can occur at any age. Dr. Fiorela Portilla, neurologist of our clinic, gives us valuable information about this disease.
What is Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease that damages the central nervous system. This damage interferes with the ability of the brain and spinal cord to communicate effectively, affecting people’s cognitive, emotional, motor, sensory and visual functions.
What are the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis?
Symptoms of MS are varied, but the most common include fatigue, memory problems, mood changes, difficulty moving, numbness, pain, tingling, and progressive deterioration of vision. These signs can vary in intensity and frequency, complicating early diagnosis of the disease.
How is it diagnosed?
The diagnosis of MS is based on a complete clinical examination including magnetic resonance imaging to detect lesions in the central nervous system. In addition, tests such as lumbar puncture, optical coherence tomography and visual evoked potentials may be performed to confirm the diagnosis.
What does the treatment consist of?
Although Multiple Sclerosis has no cure, current treatments can stabilize and improve symptoms, especially when diagnosed in the early stages. Therapies are designed to reduce the frequency of relapses and improve the patient’s quality of life. Treatment includes medications that reduce inflammation and modify the course of the disease.
How to improve the quality of life of a patient with MS?
Rehabilitation therapies are key to improving patients’ functional capacity, reducing muscle stiffness and spasms. In addition, it is recommended to maintain a regular exercise routine, adopt healthy sleep habits and avoid certain medications that can aggravate symptoms.
Remember:
Early detection and proper management of Multiple Sclerosis can significantly improve the quality of life of patients. Advances in medicine and therapies have greatly improved the treatment of this disease in the last twenty years.
