At Clinica Ricardo Palma we successfully performed the first minimally invasive endotracheal surgery, thanks to the use of state-of-the-art equipment, such as the ECMO system, a rescue technique for cases of severe respiratory failure.
A multidisciplinary team made up of anesthesiologists, vascular, thoracic and intensive care surgeons participated in the intervention carried out on a patient with serious post-COVID complications.
For minimally invasive endotracheal surgery, instruments such as the bronchofibroscope and fluoroscopy are used, which allow a detailed view of the respiratory system.
For its part, the ECMO system or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, oxygenates the blood and allows the patient’s respiratory function while their lungs remain less active, without the need to maintain pulmonary ventilation.
With this new procedure we align ourselves with international standards in the treatment of complex tracheal injuries, reducing the risk of complications in patients and ensuring their fast recovery.
