“Childhood obesity is a growing problem in our society, whose impact is reflected in an increased risk of suffering from metabolic diseases at an early age. Hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia are no longer pathologies exclusive to adults, but are now also present in children and adolescents”, says Dr. Fernando Quinto, an endocrinologist at the Centro Médico Plaza Lima Sur of Clinica Ricardo Palma, who provides us with more information and valuable recommendations regarding this issue of great importance for parents.
Why is it so important for our children to have an adequate weight?
Because they are less likely to develop chronic conditions in adulthood, they will have a better quality of life and greater autonomy in old age. Excessive weight, at any age, predisposes people to develop osteoarticular problems, and sedentary lifestyles and suffer multiple heart conditions, strokes, and depression, among other conditions.
Recommendations for parents, caregivers, and family members to consider:
Remember:
It is essential to take your children to their well-child check-ups, where weight and height charts will calculate their body mass index. Continuous evaluation will be key to ensuring that your children grow strong, healthy, and fit.
