It is estimated that in 2020 about 20 million new cases were diagnosed in the world.
Most types of cancers can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle. For this reason, it is necessary to leave bad habits behind and worry about health care from childhood. Milagros Rodriguez, Radiation Oncologist of our clinic, gives us some tips to prevent this disease.
Healthy food
A balanced diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, cereals, white meats, and low in fat, sweets, and refined carbohydrates helps us stay strong and healthy. Junk food, highly seasoned foods, and frequent consumption of red meat and sweets can lead to serious organic imbalances and constant inflammation of the body which is highly harmful.
Daily physical activity
Exercising for at least 30 minutes a day provides multiple benefits for our body and mind. It helps blood circulation, improves oxygenation, reduces the risk of tumor formation, etc. Aerobic-type exercises, such as walking outside or taking part in a dance class help prevent the development of multiple neoplasms. Obesity is associated with breast, colon, and endometrial cancer.
Annual medical check-up
It allows the early identification of risk factors and signs of any disease in its early stage and avoids complications with health. Every year, thousands of people survive cancer thanks to simple routine exams (blood counts, X-rays, mammograms, ultrasounds, etc.).
Genetic counseling
Some tumors have a high genetic predisposition. For example, it is said that breast cancer could have an inherited component among the female line of a family. Also, the same gene can be associated with ovarian cancer. The patient needs to refer his family history regarding diseases to the treating physician so that he/she can provide adequate genetic counseling and recommend medical tests to rule out any underlying pathology.
No smoking or drinking
These substances generate constant inflammation in the body leading to the formation of different types of tumors. They not only affect the lung or liver, but also the tongue, larynx, esophagus, stomach, among other organs.
Fight stress
A permanent state of tension generates oxidative stress in the body, affecting the immune system. It is important to learn to deal with adverse situations so the optimal functioning of the organism is not affected.
The specialist highlights that in recent times, cancer treatments have evolved a lot. Not only they are more effective, but also they now allow the removal of tumors of different sizes without affecting healthy tissues. Also, the benefits of all cancer therapies (chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormones, and radiotherapy) provide long-term survival and high quality of life with satisfactory cures.
