“The most widespread and standardized methods to preserve fertility are egg and embryo freezing. A third method that, for the time been and to a certain extent, is considered experimental is the freezing of ovarian tissue ”, says Dr. Alberto Franco, gynecologist at our clinic.
What types of patients may require help to preserve their fertility?
Patients who have received treatment for some type of cancer, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Patients with previous ovarian surgeries, endometriosis, a history of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, and patients who do not have defined reproductive prospects.
Is there a recommended age?
If there is a history of previous illnesses, it should be considered as soon as possible. If the motivation is personal or social, ideally before the age of 35; however, it can also be tried beyond this age.
What are the main advantages of preserving fertility?
The main advantage is to have an ovarian reserve, in this case we refer to quantity and quality of ovules, with the best possible conditions to be able to carry the reproductive process with less risk in the future.
How long does the preservation process usually take?
In cases of egg and embryo freezing, about 15 to 20 days from the start of the process.
