Although acne is a frequent dermatological condition in adolescents, it can also appear in adulthood and cause countless discomforts, both physically and mentally.
Undoubtedly, growing up entails a series of significant and necessary changes to achieve proper development, although these in some cases can bring unwanted changes, such as acne. Despite the fact that it is a fairly common skin condition among the population, it is evident that it can have repercussions at the level of physical health, but also mental health, since it often has a direct effect on the self-esteem and confidence of those who suffers from it. In addition, it is important to note that this is not just a problem that occurs in adolescence, the reality is that many people can continue to fight acne in adulthood or even develop it at this stage of life.
What is adult acne?
It is a skin disorder that occurs when the pores become clogged and inflamed, leading to the appearance of pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads on the face (cheeks, mouth, and jaw), neck, chest, and back. As Carlos Sordo, a dermatologist at Clinica Ricardo Palma, points out, it can occur in people over 25 years of age or older, when the hormonal and physiological changes typical of puberty have ended.
According to research, 8% to 10% of adults between 25 and 34 years of age suffer from it, while 3% to 5% are usually between 25 and 44 years of age, in addition, 80% of the time it affects women, indicates the specialist.
What are the causes of adult acne?
Indeed, it appears mainly due to genetic factors that predispose its development; However, its causes can vary, as they are often related to hormonal changes, stress, unhealthy diets, and the use of certain skin products. In general, as the dermatologist refers, it usually presents with a mild to moderate degree, which gives rise to a series of papular, erythematous and inflammatory lesions.
It should be noted that, depending on the severity of the acne, it can cause highly inflammatory and painful lesions, causing significant physical and aesthetic changes and psychologically impacting the patient. Sometimes, spots and scars can occur, which is why the doctor recommends early dermatological treatment to alleviate discomfort and minimize sequelae.
How is adult acne treated?
First of all, Sordo highlights the importance of always investigating the cause that originates it and the severity of the condition in order to treat it efficiently. In general, treatments for adult acne are similar to those for juvenile acne, and may include skin care products, dietary changes, topical or oral medications, and dermatologic procedures.
Skin care products that contain salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or retinoids may be effective in treating mild to moderate adult acne. Similarly, topical medications such as clindamycin, erythromycin, and azelaic acid may also be helpful for inflammatory adult acne.
In addition, if necessary, treatment can be supplemented with certain procedures, such as laser therapy, microdermabrasion, and comedone extraction, since they can be effective in treating resistant adult acne.
How to prevent adult acne?
Since it is a multifactorial disease and with a greater genetic predisposition, its prevention is more difficult. However, Sordo says there are some lifestyle changes and skin care habits that can help reduce the risk of developing this condition, including:
