Our Pediatrics service offers a comprehensive evaluation of the baby, in order to identify any abnormality in its walking. We have specialties such as Pediatric Traumatology and Orthopedics, and Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, to provide multidisciplinary treatment in cases of flat feet, pes cavus, among others.

Dr. Guillermo Veramendi, recognized specialist in our pediatrician staff, points out that it is essential that parents know how to recognize any sign of abnormality in the baby’s footprint, since many of the pathologies in adults have their origin in childhood.

Aspects to consider in the development of the baby’s walking:

• Around his first year, the baby takes his first steps, initially spreading his legs and turning the balls of his feet inward. At 18 months they manage to touch the floor with the heel, seeking balance with their arms.
• Around 2 years of age, the pendulum movement of the arms appears intermittently. As the baby gains more dexterity, beginning to bring his legs together at age 3.
• Around 6 years of age, cases of flat feet usually appear, most will only require exercises to improve physical condition and strengthen muscles, such as walking barefoot on sand, swimming, among others.

The specialist recommends:

• Encourage the prone position (face down), as it will help improve neck and head control, strengthen the back muscles, facilitate crawling and, later, walking.
• Stimulate the baby to crawl before walking, as the baby will use his whole body to move around, managing to develop better coordination.

Characteristics of the ideal footwear to promote a correct footprint:

• Soft footwear and sole to promote movement.
• The insole must be completely flat, without the pads that are placed on so-called semi-orthopedic shoes.

Remember, proper footwear will help prevent deformities and should be worn only when the baby has started to walk and not before.
