The treatment of this condition consists of osmotic laxatives such as polyethylene glycol (PEG), lactulose, magnesium salts, among others. What is constipation?

It is the delay or difficulty in defecation. The frequency and consistency of normal stools vary with the age of the children and the diet, they can also vary considerably from child to child.

Some criteria and symptoms that indicate constipation:

• Decreased emission of feces. Less than three bowel movements a week
• Painful defecation
• Bleeding stretch marks in the stool, especially in the presence of fissures
• At least one episode of fecal incontinence per week
• Existence of postures or attitudes to avoid defecation
• Excessively bulky stools

Hygienic-dietary measures and recommendations to prevent constipation:

• Children should be encouraged to defecate after meals
• Have enough time to go to the bathroom and be able to defecate without rushing
• It is important that young children can support their feet to defecate, if they do not support them, they will have to put more pressure with the pelvic floor and there will be more risks of fissures, prolapses and a phobia of defecation
• Avoid excessive intake of dairy. The amount of cow’s milk in the diet should not exceed 500-750 ml/day, depending on age
• Eat a diet rich in fiber such as fruits, vegetables, beans, cereals, and whole grain breads
• Drink fluids daily and avoid prolonged fasting

When should I my child to the pediatrician?

If the child has a good appetite, no vomiting or abdominal pain, it can be kept at home using the indicated hygienic-dietary measures. If the child has constant or bilious vomiting, bloating and severe abdominal pain, refusal of food, fever, or rectal bleeding, a pediatrician’s assessment will be essential.

Remember, no treatment will be effective unless complete evacuation is achieved. This will require a lot of patience and effort on the part of the child and the parents. Proper guidance for both of you will be key to successfully combat this condition.
