In a season like summer, when the sun’s rays are more intense every day, the use of sunscreen is the first thing we think of to protect our skin. You probably have some clear ideas about its application, such as, for example, that it should be used all year round or that it should be applied frequently. However, Dr. María Luisa Téllez, a dermatologist at our clinic, gives us more detailed and precise information about the correct use of sunscreen.
- Not everyone can use the same sunscreen. Each person has a different type of complexion depending on their characteristics: degree of oiliness, age, and sensitivity, among other particularities. So, it is essential to choose the most suitable for you; if you have any doubts, consult your dermatologist. Currently, there are sunscreens for each skin type, which adapt very well to the needs of each person, providing greater comfort and making daily and frequent use of the product easy.
- About waterproof sunscreen. A waterproof sunscreen loses effectiveness depending on the time of immersion in the water or the number of times we have dived. The right sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before exposure to the sun and water, retain at least 70% of its protection after a dive, or manage to protect four dips of 20 minutes each. In conclusion, you should reapply sunscreen according to the time you dive into the water or stay outdoors.
- After applying sunscreen, do not use perfumes or colognes. Sunscreen is the last thing that should be applied as part of our daily skin protection routine. Many perfumes and colognes have alcohol in their composition and this can irritate the skin, especially in the summer months; in addition, many fragrances can react with sunlight and produce stains on the skin.
- Use of sunscreen and tanning. Sunscreens allow tanning, only its appearance is slower; however, it will be more even and long-lasting. The sun protection factor number should also be taken into account.
- The application of large amounts of sunscreen does not ensure total protection. It is better to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before sun exposure, apply it evenly on clean skin (it can be after moisturizing), and reapply it every 2 or 3 hours. Do not forget to apply sunscreen on ears, neck, folds, and shoulders, they are very sensitive areas.
