“Since it was first detected, COVID-19 has been mutating or changing shape. The new genetic versions that keep emerging are called: variants. According to WHO, EG.5 first occurred in February 2023, and cases have been steadily increasing until reaching Peru, where the first cases have already been reported. We cannot let our guard down,” explains Dr. Julio Cachay, an internist and specialist in infectious diseases at our clinic, who provides us with valuable information on the subject.
Is this variant more contagious and more dangerous than the previous ones?
The WHO indicated that EG.5 has a higher transmissibility, but is not more serious, or does not suggest additional public health risks relative to the other Omicron variants currently circulating. However, it should be noted that it could cause problems in vulnerable or chronically ill individuals, as could the other COVID-19 variants.
What is the benefit of getting the Bivalent Vaccine?
The bivalent vaccine is a booster to protect people against COVID-19. Its name refers to the fact that it contains two antigens that are capable of producing neutralizing antibodies to both the original strain and its variant Omicron and EG.5 (ERIS), which predominate in the world.
What are the symptoms of the new EG.5 variant?
The main symptoms remain sore throat, cough, hoarse voice, headache, muscle aches, and loss of smell.
¿ What are the symptoms of an urgent need to go to a health center?
Recommendations to prevent transmission of this and other variants of COVID-19:
