Cataracts are the opacity of the crystalline lens, mostly attributed to natural aging. However, there are cases in which they can be produced by trauma, radiation, medications, diseases or even be present since birth, explains Dr. Alvaro Acosta, ophthalmologist of our clinic, who gives us more details about this ocular pathology.
What are the symptoms?
Cataracts produce a decrease in vision, which develops slowly and progressively. Visual impairment is not limited to the amount of vision, but also compromises other aspects, such as contrast, color saturation and glare.
How are cataracts diagnosed?
Cataracts are diagnosed by a comprehensive ophthalmologic evaluation and slit lamp examination by an eye care professional.
How are cataracts treated?
Cataracts are treated surgically. There is no other treatment that can be used such as drops, medications or vitamins. During surgery, the cataract is removed and replaced with a custom-fitted intraocular lens.
What happens if cataracts are not operated on?
If cataracts are not operated timely and properly, a worsening of vision will occur, which can even lead to blindness.
