Adolescence is a complex stage, full of challenges and changes that, in certain cases, can lead adolescents to experience depression. If not treated in time, this condition can generate destructive thoughts and even make them consider making an attempt on their lives. Antonella Galli, a psychologist at our clinic, explains that severe depression distorts thinking, generates a negative view of the future and can lead the teenager to wish to disappear. Therefore, it is crucial to learn to identify the warning signs in order to offer them the necessary help.
How to recognize the warning signs?
Symptoms of depression in adolescents include behavioral changes, social withdrawal, lack of interest in activities they once enjoyed, fatigue, insomnia, apathy, recurrent forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, slowed movements and negative thoughts. In addition, they may experience appetite disturbances and a generalized sense of hopelessness.
What should parents do?
If parents notice a significant change in their child’s behavior, it is essential to act immediately. In many cases, the condition may improve with psychological therapy, but in the most severe cases, it is recommended that a psychiatrist be consulted to evaluate the situation and, if necessary, consider temporary hospitalization to protect the adolescent’s life so that appropriate treatment can be initiated.
How to support a teenager with depression?
It is essential not to belittle or offend a depressed person. Depression is a physical illness that affects the brain, causing inflammation and extreme exhaustion, making it difficult to perform everyday tasks such as going to school or completing homework. Showing support and understanding rather than criticism is key to a successful recovery.
Remember:
Mental health is as important as physical health, at any age. Adolescents with depression may be more prone to learning problems, discrimination, social exclusion and harmful behaviors such as alcohol or tobacco use. An emotionally stable young person is better able to have healthy relationships, be productive and face life’s challenges in a positive way.
