How does colon and rectal cancer start?
It originates in the digestive system, where food is processed to produce energy to form solid waste. Its origin can be silent, at the level of the mucosa of the large intestine or rectum and, later, it can present symptoms. Most of these cancers start as a polyp.
What is its level of incidence?
Colorectal cancer has an incidence in the world of 20 per 100,000 inhabitants and represents 10% of all types of cancer.
Does it occur more in men or women?
The incidence in men and women is almost similar, with a slightly higher risk for males, according to the record of occurrence in Metropolitan Lima.
Which are the risk factors?
Some of them are: age, history of polyps and previous colorectal cancer, inflammatory diseases of the colon, family history of colorectal cancer or adenomatous polyps, family syndromes, race, lifestyle (overweight, physical inactivity, poor diet, tobacco use and alcohol) and type 2 diabetes.
