Breast milk is the most complete food. It has the right nutrients newborns need to grow strong and healthy. Its main benefits include (i) optimal nutrition, especially for the development of the central nervous system, (2) lower incidence of infectious, metabolic diseases and allergies, (3) stimulation of psychomotor, emotional and social development, and (4) the development of a strong bond between mother and child.
The best way to increase milk supply is to keep on nursing the baby. It is also important that the mother stay in a relaxed environment while feeding the little one, drink enough water and have a balanced diet.
During the first days of the baby’s life, the scarce and yellowish breast milk is called colostrum. From the fourth to the fifteenth day it is transitional, increasing its fluidity and volume. Ripe milk is produced from the third week and is more abundant and fluid.
