“Adenoviruses are a group of viruses that in children typically cause infections in the respiratory and intestinal tracts. Adenovirus infections can occur in children of any age, but the most susceptible are between 6 months and 2 years of age,” explains Dr. Julio Cachay, an internist and Specialist in infectious diseases at our clinic, who provides us with valuable information on the subject. .
How are they transmitted?
Respiratory infections are transmitted when a person comes into contact with another individual or an object that is contaminated with the virus. Intestinal tract infections are generally transmitted by fecal-oral contact.
What are the symptoms of an adenovirus infection in children?
Most adenovirus infections are mild with few symptoms; however, each child may experience them differently and manifest: runny nose, sore throat, fever, persistent cough, headache, swollen lymph nodes, watery diarrhea sudden pain, abdominal tenderness and vomiting.
How is it diagnosed?
In addition to a complete medical history and physical examination, tests to diagnose adenovirus are needed only when the child is very sick and may include tests on respiratory fluids or stool samples.
What is the usual treatment for adenovirus infections?
There is no specific treatment. Treatment focuses on relieving the symptoms and antibiotics are not used to treat them. In case of respiratory infection, an increase in fluid intake is indicated and, if necessary, intravenous fluids and electrolytes can be administered, associated bronchodilator medications or supplemental oxygen may be considered. In the treatment of intestinal infection, oral rehydration is required, and in situations of oral intolerance, the use of the intravenous route to rehydrate.
