Moles, or nevi, are small spots on your skin that you probably have and, although they are mostly harmless, you should always watch them closely. Knowing the characteristics of your moles and checking them periodically can help you detect skin cancer early. Dr. Yaril Moreyra, dermatologist of our clinic, gives us more details on this subject.
What are moles and why should you observe them?
Moles are a group of pigment-producing cells called melanocytes. They are not all alike. Sometimes, they can be an indication of serious health problems. Therefore, knowing their shape, size and characteristics is key to prevent a skin neoplasm. Any change in appearance should be evaluated by a specialist.
How can you care for and prevent problems with your moles?
Moles and childhood:
During childhood, your skin is more sensitive to solar radiation, which may predispose it to develop more moles over time. Cumulative sun damage at this stage of life increases the risk of developing abnormal moles or skin cancer in adulthood. Therefore, it is essential that you protect the children in your family with appropriate clothing, sunscreen and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun.
What should you do if you want to remove a mole?
If you want to remove a mole for cosmetic reasons, make sure it has no suspicious features, such as irregular edges, various shades of color or rapid growth. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, consult your dermatologist, who may recommend a biopsy to rule out problems before proceeding with removal.
Remember:
The best treatment is prevention. Examine your moles regularly, protect yourself from the sun and consult a specialist if you have any doubts. Taking care of your health is in your hands.
