“During the winter it is common to spend more time at home, which often means spending more hours in front of computer screens, televisions and electronic devices, causing eye fatigue. The lack of natural light and the constant effort of the eyes when focusing up close contribute to the appearance of this condition,” explains Dr. Mary Portugal, ophthalmologist at our clinic, who provides more information on this condition.
What is eye fatigue?
Eye fatigue is more of a symptom than a disease. It does not cause permanent damage or injury. Some people use the term differently. For some, it means tired or watery eyes, while for others it is synonymous with blurred vision, headache, or facial muscle fatigue from squeezing the eyes for long periods of time when not wearing the correct eyewear.
What are the symptoms of eye fatigue?
Burning, itching or pain in the eyes, dry eye, blurred or double vision, headache, neck, shoulder and back pain, increased sensitivity to light (photophobia), difficulty concentrating or the sensation of not being able to keep the eyes open are the most frequent symptoms of this condition.
How to prevent eye fatigue?

To keep your eyes from overworking, it is important to take regular breaks while using the computer and to perform eye relaxation exercises, such as looking at distant objects or blinking frequently. It is also advisable to limit the time you spend in front of a screen and to engage in outdoor activities to enjoy natural light. This is very beneficial for visual health and helps reduce eye fatigue.
