These two new Units will be equipped with modern high-end equipment Cadwell Easy III, state-of-the-art technology equipped with software assisted by artificial intelligence with which high-precision video electroencephalograms will be performed, as well as video polysomnography that will facilitate the detection of the main sleeping problems. “The Epilepsy Unit will be headed by Dr. Walter De la Cruz, and the Sleep Medicine Unit, by Dr. Frank Villarreal, both renowned neurologists from our institution, says Dr. Manuel Moquillaza, endovascular neurologist and Service Coordinator of Neurology”.

This unit is equipped with state-of-the-art video electroencephalogram equipment that will be able to carry out studies, mainly on those patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, and evaluate other possibilities that can successfully contribute to the treatment of their disease.

“This is an innovative piece of equipment that will also allow us to evaluate patients with events similar to epileptic seizures and, thus, determine the exact diagnosis in each case, of course, hand in hand with the extensive experience of our staff who will attend this new unit”, said Dr. Walter de la Cruz, Coordinator of the Epilepsy Unit.

A valuable contribution to the treatment of Epilepsy

The Epilepsy Unit of Clinica Ricardo Palma represents an advance in the medical care service for patients with this type of disorder, since it is estimated that there are between 300,000 and 500,000 Peruvians with epilepsy, with approximately 30% being drug-resistant who must get proper treatment. Epilepsy is a chronic non-communicable brain disease that is manifested by a sustained tendency to have recurrent epileptic seizures.

This unit provides our patients with a video polysomnography equipment, which will allow a comprehensive and accurate study of multiple physiological functions of the body during sleep, allowing a high accuracy in the diagnosis of sleep disorders.

“This high-end equipment, equipped with high-quality sleep sensors, will help us to have a more reliable diagnosis, taking as a reference the highest international standards dictated by constant innovation in the field of Sleep Medicine. Specialized support to treat sleep disorders

This new specialized unit will strengthen outpatient care, procedures, and long-term treatment for patients with sleep pathologies, such as: sleep apnea, breathing problems while sleeping, insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, and sleep behaviors abnormal during sleep. It is estimated that at least 25% of the population will have insomnia problems at some point in their lives and between 5% and 15% may have sleep apnea worldwide. Sleep disorders are becoming more frequent, causing deterioration in people’s quality of life.
