“Styes are inflammatory or infectious nodules that develop on the eyelids. They tend to be a common problem in children and can usually be treated at home. Other cases, however, can be very painful and will require the evaluation of a specialist, who will prescribe the necessary treatment for each case”, says Dr. Jaqueline Mendoza, pediatric ophthalmologist at our clinic.
Why do styes come out?
Styes are the result of thickening or secondary infection of the sebaceous glands, which can be caused by inadequate eyelid hygiene or excessive touching of the eyelids. Recurrent styes are also associated with visual strain due to lack of corrective lens use.
How do they appear?
Styes present as painful, tender, red lumps near the edge of the eyelids, which may rupture causing purulent discharge (pus).
How are they diagnosed?
The diagnosis is made based on the symptoms presented by the minor and the physical examination that confirms the presence of a tumor with the characteristics already described.

Most children will improve during the first and second week of treatment, however large or persistent styes may require incision and drainage by a specialist.
